The Observatory began as the dream of financier, mining giant and real estate developer Griffith Griffith. He traveled from Wales to southern California in the 1860s and eventually acquired the land where the observatory and park are located. Griffith was fascinated by the big park he saw in Europe and conceived one for Los Angeles. In the end, he donated his property to the city for this purpose. In 1904, Griffith visited the nearby Mount Wilson Observatory (astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered his discovery) and fell in love with astronomy. He wrote: “If all humans can observe it through a telescope, it will change the world.” According to this visit, Griffith decided to provide funding to the city to build an observatory on the top of Hollywood. He wants to make sure that the public can use the telescope to achieve his vision. It took some time for the building to be approved until the 1933 (14 years after Griffith’s death) and the ground was broken. The Observatory is considered a monument to science, open to the public forever, and must withstand all earthquakes except the most intense earthquakes.
