In 1973, Warren studied at Rutgers University Law School. She graduated in 1976 and passed the bar exam; in the same year, Warrens’ son, Alexander, was born. Two years later, in 1978, Warren and her husband divorced. Even after remarried to Bruceman in 1980, she chose to keep her last name. In the first year of her career, Warren did not practice actively in law firms, but taught disabled children in public schools. She also did some small legal work at home, such as wills and real estate applications. Warren returned to his alma mater in 1977 as a lecturer at Rutgers University. She stayed there for a school year, then returned to Texas to find a job at the University of Houston Law Center, where she served as an associate dean of academic affairs from 1978 to 1983. In 1981, she was an associate professor at the University of Texas Law School; she returned to 1987 as a full professor from 1983.
