Years later, Mischel and colleagues followed up on some of the original cotton candy test participants. They found surprising things for those who were able to delay satisfaction during the test of cotton candy, because the cognitive abilities of young children and their ability to cope with adolescent stress and frustration increased significantly. They also scored higher SAT scores. These results led many to conclude that the ability to pass marshmallow testing and delay satisfaction is key to a successful future. However, Mischel and his colleagues are always more cautious about their findings. They believe that if more participants are studied, the link between delayed satisfaction and future academic success in the marshmallow test may be diminished. They also observed that factors such as the child’s family environment may be more influential in the future than their research shows.
