The Black Power Movement began in the 1960s and lasted until the 1980s. Although the campaign has a variety of strategies, from non-violence to active defense, its purpose is to turn the ideology of black power into reality. Activists focus on two main principles: black autonomy and self-determination. The campaign began in the United States, but the simplicity and ubiquity of its slogan allowed it to be applied globally, from Somalia to the United Kingdom. The cornerstone of the black power movement is the Panthers Self-Defense Force. Founded in October 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, the Panther Party is a revolutionary socialist organization. The Panthers are known for their 10-point platform, free breakfast plan (later adopted by the government for the development of WIC) and their insistence on building blacks to defend themselves. The party was severely attacked by the FBI surveillance program COINTELPro, causing many black activists to die or be imprisoned. Although the Panther Party began with blacks as the leader of the movement and continued to struggle with absinthe during the entire period of existence, women in the party exerted influence and made their voices on some issues. Notable activists in the Black Power movement include Elaine Brown (the first chairman of the Panthers), Angela Davis (the leader of the American Communist Party) and Assat Shakur (member of the Black People’s Liberation Army). These three women are radical activists of the US government. Although the black power movement declined in the late 1970s, it had a lasting impact on African American art and culture due to the persecution of participants (such as Freddy Hampton).
