Acadia National Park is located on Baltic Island on the rocky coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Maine, east of Bar Harbor. The park has a variety of environmental features, the most recent glacialization, featuring cobblestone coastlines and mountain peaks. Cadillac Mountain is located on the highest mountain on the east coast of the United States, at 1,530 feet above sea level, in the park. Native Americans have lived in the current state of Maine for 12,000 years. Before the European colonial rule, four different tribes – Marisett, McMark, Passa Maquadi and Penobscot – lived in Here. These tribes are collectively known as Wabanaki, or “people of Dawnland”, tribes built birch bark canoes, hunting, fishing, gathering berries, harvesting crickets, and trading with other Wabanaki. Today, every tribe has a reservation, and the government headquarters is in Maine. Wabanaki called the desert island “Permetic” (sloping land). At the beginning of the 17th century, the French government named it a part of New France and explored it with Pierre Du Gua and his navigator Samuel Champlain. Du Gua’s mission is “to establish the name, power and authority of the French king; to summon locals to understand Christianity; to understand the people, to cultivate and settle the land; to explore, especially to seek precious metal mines.”
