Since Allport published his original research report, researchers have been trying for years to empirically test whether contact with other groups can reduce bias. In a 2006 paper, Thomas Pettigrew and Linda Tropp conducted a meta-analysis: they reviewed the results of more than 500 previous studies (about 250,000 study participants) and provided support for the contact hypothesis. In addition, they found that these results were not due to self-selection (ie, people with less prejudice chose to contact other groups, while those with greater bias chose to avoid contact) because contact had a beneficial effect even if participants participated. Have not chosen to contact members of other groups. Although the contact hypothesis is most often studied in the context of racial prejudice, the researchers found that exposure can reduce prejudice against members of various marginal groups.
